Do not confuse it with Dark Mode
The hype of “The Social Dilemma” made many viewers become aware of the power of technology and its influence on all of us. For UX Designers, the use of dishonest tricks in digital platforms is not a new topic. We call them dark patterns.
Evil design patterns, unfortunately, are very common…
In 2020, tech bootcamps are not a new topic anymore. They have been around since at least 2012, offering courses in diverse subjects (typically, web development, mobile development, UX/UI design, data science, and project management) and flooding a digital-starved market with new graduates each year.
Last year, something changed. The number of corporate training bootcamp graduates has surpassed the number of classic bootcamp graduates. This reveals a new trend, not only in the bootcamp market itself but also in enterprise operations. Companies are acknowledging the benefits of intensive, accelerated learning programs to qualify their workforce for digital roles.
Reskilling: learning…
In the last days, the most recent Instagram update has been in the news for the worst reasons. Many users and influencers have publicly spoken out their dissatisfaction, namely James Charles, who, in a rant video, advised his followers not to update their apps.
At the center of these negative opinions is the new layout, where the basic Instagram options — camera and notifications — have been removed from the bottom menu bar and instead are displayed in the upper-right corner of the home page, next to the direct message button.
You must have heard about solving design problems through design patterns, their implementation steps, and some problems that can arise from them. But do you realize the impact these patterns have on the user experience? A few weeks ago, I didn’t at all.
After finishing the UX Nanodegree by Udacity and landing a new role as UX Engineer, I decided to continue with my education on the matter. So, I decided to join the Interaction Design Foundation (IDF) which offers several online courses with certification at a very affordable membership price.

In the context of International Women’s Day, I decided to write about my experiences as a woman working in tech, an industry known for being widely male-dominated. My career is as short as three years old, but during that time I have had the privilege to have different experiences, from corporate to startups, from national to international environments, from onsite to fully remote. This gives me a broad experience to comment on the matter, especially since I’ve already encountered so many problematic situations that must be brought to light and discussed.
The interview process for this role was quick and…
What does Bill Gates have in common with Grace Hopper? What about Allan Turing and Ada Lovelace? Or Mark Zuckerberg and Carol Shaw?
Each of these names belongs to someone who made an immeasurable contribution to the technology field. The difference between them is the recognition they have over the years.
Successful women in the technology industry have been historically overlooked and diminished, but they have always been around coding, developing algorithms, creating new products, and innovating. …
My Medium’s front page is always full of “How I earned X-dollars on Medium.” If you don’t follow related topics in Entrepreneurism, Productivity, Work, Freelancing, Money, or even Life Advice, I bet you’re getting the same headlines.
I started writing on Medium for portfolio purposes. Not as a writer, but as junior engineer frequently accused of not showing interest in the engineering matter (oh, being a woman in tech with diverse interests), so I thought writing about it would be an excellent way to prove my commitment. …
I’ve been working with CSS for years, and I must confess: I never completely understood CSS units until recently. There are so many options that it’s easy for a developer to stick only to the ones they use more often or to use a trial-and-error approach.
However, knowing all the existent CSS measurement units and when to apply each one of them opens up a range of possibilities for any situation that may arise. I decided it was about time to fill this gap in my knowledge, and the best way to commit to my study is writing about it…
Yesterday, I was on the phone with my best friend. Suddenly, Gino, her lovely Guinea pig started squeaking, and she had to move to another room to continue our call. She got back to our conversation, which I actually don’t recall because a more important question crossed my mind: Why is this animal called Guinea pig?
Actually, this was not exactly my question, because I first formulated it in my native language, Portuguese. We call these rodents “porquinhos da Índia”, which can be strictly translated as “little Indian pigs”.
Since I was already in touch with a proud Guinea pig…
