Hello Nick,
I tend to believe that as a UX Designer, I focus on the users; but as a UX Professional, I focus on the clients; and both things overlap in some aspects but not 100%. I've seen some colleagues getting disappointed with the industry when they land a job and find that the altruistic value of "find out user needs and how to please them" is not always like that... Sometimes even in educational and non-profits organizations the design work gets mixed with marketing interests; and as you say, to thrive as professional, you need to think about how to help clients /bosses making revenues.
Thank you for one more lucid story!
