In defense of Gaston, at least he tried to engage in Belle's interests, trying to read her books, to connect with her. And he took the effort of trying to rescue her from the castle. The Beast took her father as a prisoner, then took HER as a prisoner and forced her into his own hobbies. Between the two, I actually think Gaston would be a better fit for her. Your daughter is not 100% clueless.
